I am delighted to have had the opportunity to review Chelsea Winter’s new cookbook ‘At My Table’. Chelsea Winter was the 2012 Masterchef New Zealand Winner, and has just released this fabulous cookbook, filled with mouth-watering recipes.
I’ve got plenty of cookbooks, and I do enjoy cooking a meal for my family. I have always loved being able to satisfy people with a well cooked meal – so it’s always nice to find new recipes, but let’s get things straight – I’m no Masterchef. In fact after becoming a mum, I did lose the passion I had for cooking, it had become a real chore. In the last 6 months, I have started to enjoy cooking again – but after trying a few of Chelsea’s recipes, I suddenly have that passion back – I get excited about trying another of her recipes – how awesome is that?
Like I said, I have plenty of cookbooks, but some of the recipes I have tried have ended in disaster…. all part of experimenting with cooking. I can be a bit of a sceptic in fact when flicking through cookbooks, always thinking – oh sure, like I could pull that off!
Needless to say, when I flicked through Chelsea’s cookbook, the recipes looked wonderful, but in the back of my head I was wondering whether they would turn out as beautifully as they looked, and sounded. I proceeded cautiously with my first recipe, the ‘Cajun Chicken Burgers, with Avocado and Mayo’. Well, as I posted to Chelsea’s facebook page – my family and I just LOVED them. My father, who can be quite fussy at times said to me ‘I’ve had a lot of burgers in my time, and that has to be one of the nicest burgers I’ve ever eaten!’ (not a direct quote, as I had to remove the expletives!!). He was very happy with it, and so was my 6 year old, my fiancé and Mum. Not only was the recipe simple to follow – but also simple to cook, and delicious – MY KIND OF RECIPE!!
Spurred on by the success of the burgers, I planned my grocery shop, and an entire week’s meals all from ‘At My Table’. Next up I tried the Mediterranean Sausage Bake (you can find the recipe, which Chelsea has kindly allowed us to post on LDM HERE). This is a hearty, easy, delicious and so importantly these days – affordable meal. It easily fed the 4 adults and 1 child I cook for each night, and once again, I had many lovely comments from my family. My scepticism of a cookbook producing meal after meal of success, was receding with each meal I cooked from ‘At My Table’. I went on to cook:
‘Steak Pizza with Mustard Cream’
‘Creamy Chicken and Vegetable Pie’
‘Steak with Creamy Mushroom, Bacon and Garlic Sauce’
‘Lemon and Lime Tartlets’
AND, the best EVER ‘Chicken Caesar Salad, with Basil Dressing’ (this I could eat for lunch and dinner, every day of the week – no kidding it’s SO yum.)
All of these recipes turned out beautifully, and were very well received by my entire family.
I would recommend every home cook should own a copy of ‘At My Table’. These recipes are REAL food, soul food, not super fussy, immensely complicated recipes that could only ever be replicated by a top chef, but food that every home cook can reproduce to wow their friends and family, and provide balanced, affordable and delicious food for everyone. My copy, after only having it for two weeks, is already well thumbed through, slightly spattered and stained (as every treasured cookbook becomes) and never far from my side when I’m in the kitchen.
Today I’m making Chelsea’s ‘Incredibly Tasty Cookies’ – which I have no doubt will be just that – incredibly tasty.
If you purchase of copy of ‘At My Table’, which you can do so HERE, I would suggest also making sure you had plenty of fresh herbs and spices on hand, as much of the wonderful flavours in Chelsea’s meals come from using plenty of yummy herbs and spices (which I love, because it means less processed flavour!). My one complaint would be that I’m now never going to be able to truly enjoy a takeaway burger or pizza again – none will quite be good enough anymore!
If I sound ‘over the top’ passionate in my review, that is because I am. This is quite honestly my favourite cookbook, the best one I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning – make sure you try it yourself, I can promise you, you’ll not be disappointed.
