Family Adventures in New Zealand

| August 27, 2013 | 0 Comments

Muster up for a thrilling insight into New Zealand’s rugged pioneering past.

Kids are never alone on Wharekauhau. There’s just so much family adventure and excitement at every turn that their folks insist on joining in too – every time.

That’s why Wharekauhau proudly says:

We welcome families!

Wharekauhau Country Estate is a 5000-acre authentic, working sheep-station with genuine shepherds and their astonishing sheep dogs; our history goes back directly to New Zealand’s earliest pioneering days. We are framed by the Rimutaka ranges to the West and Palliser Bay to the East and surrounded by ancient native forest, spectacular beaches, bountiful rivers and tranquil lakes – together making a veritable smorgasbord of action adventures. But first you must join our exceptionally popular daily Farm Tour, which will reveal the reality of the working day on a sheep station.

You’ll watch in absolute amazement as Wharekauhau’s shepherds proudly demonstrate their skills and duties… and who can resist admiring the absolute obedience and cleverness of their sheep dogs? This is not showtime for tourists but genuine farm-life experiences as shepherd and dog muster the sheep just as they have always done.

You also learn how the original stock had to be driven here through virgin bush and along the treacherous, wild coastline. Those who survived had to be hearty and rugged and determined – and that means those early shepherds as well as the animals!

One Farm-Tour highlight every visitor mentions with wonder is the walk in our Podocarp forest, seeing evergreen trees of Gondwana, the huge continent which broke up into Africa, South America, India, Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand, and New Caledonia between 105 and 45 million years ago. And here’s a good tip – September/October is the lambing season, so if you can be here then you will share in the excitement of the newcomers’ arrival, making your visit even more of a genuine Kiwi farming experience.

Perfect for Kids
Take the daily farm tour to experience the reality of a working day on a sheep station and watch the shepherds round up their flock, using their highly trained sheep dogs.

Help the chef prepare local ingredients into gourmet experience and picnic on the beach.
Go walking in the Podocarp forest and marvel at the beauty and history of the ancient native evergreen trees.
Visit the brown seal colony, or the lighthouse at Cape Palliser Bay.

So what else is there? Almost too much. A family picnic with unforgettable views in spectacular surroundings (the food gets rave reviews too). Perhaps a trip to a Brown Fur Seal Colony.
And, back to food again, kids and parents can even join a chef in the kitchen to learn to cook our wonderful natural ingredients, most of them grown on the estate or produced locally. Our beef and lamb have both won Hallmark Awards for Excellence and we are the national stud for the Texel, a breed of sheep that uniquely marbles of its fat through its flesh, just like Wagyu beef.

Wharekauhau’s wild and wonderful setting is hard to leave. If you do, there are fascinating trips to make. Close by is Martinborough and Greytown; both are a gourmet’s ideal destination (especially the chocolates at Schoc) and the adjacent vineyards make nowfabled Pinot Noir wines and many also have cafes and tasting bars. Featherston features a steam locomotive museum that’s well deserving of a detour.
Wharekauhau welcomes families in search of authentic adventure and action and a unique insight into New Zealand life.

We guarantee you’ll get all this and much, much more.
