Eat Well NZ

Tell us a little about your blog.
Eat Well NZ is a healthy living blog to guide you in learning to nourish your body and find balance in a world of confusing and sometimes extreme nutritional advice. You don’t need to quit foods, follow rules, or go to the extreme to be healthy (unless you have a food allergy!). This can make you anything but! I share recipes, nutrition information and tips for happy, healthy living.

What is the story behind how you came to be a blogger?
My journey to blogging started quite a few years ago when I started writing for NZ Girl. At the same time I had a website offering online nutrition consultations. After a while I decided I wanted to expand on my website and that I wanted to have articles on it with nutritional information and recipes, like the stuff I was sharing on NZ Girl. So I did a bit of investigating, and I discovered wordpress, then the world of blogs. I think I’ve had my blog for about 3-4 years now, but it’s only really in the past few years I’ve paid it real attention.

There’s so much nutrition ‘noise’ at the moment, and I’m seeing people become increasingly anxious about what to eat or what not to eat, I’m passionate about sharing balanced, moderate information and helping people find a healthy relationship with food. This is the focus of my blog.

Where do you go or what do you do to get inspiration for your blog?
I do a lot of reading! As a part of my job I have to do quite a bit of professional development, so learning new things about nutrition inspires me for posts. There’s so much misinformation about nutrition out there, so often I’ll see these things and be inspired to write about it.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt and how has it shaped you?
I think it has been to always be authentic. A while back I wanted to appeal to everyone so I’d try and fit every box. Once I stopped trying to fit all the boxes, and went with the approach that was true to me, my blog grew. Also don’t be afraid to post your true thoughts. Some of my most popular posts have been ones that I was scared to post !

What one piece of advice would you give to new bloggers?
Be true to what you believe in, not what you think others want to hear. Be consistent and don’t give up. I’ve thought about quitting blogging a few times, and the day after the thought had run through my head, some cool things happened with my blog!

Name some of the bloggers that you look up to and why?
The Nutrition Guru and the Chef is an Australian nutritionist. I love that she’s not afraid to say what she thinks and calls out lots of fads. She’s pretty hilarious too.

In NZ, I look up to The Style Insider, for turning her blog into a full time career.

There are lots of bloggers I admire. I admire In Rhi’s Pantry for creating such a gorgeous blog and although she’s not so much a blogger, I really admire Makaia Carr of Motivate Me NZ for the amazing community she has created for women wanting motivation to eat well, get fit and be healthy.

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?
During the week, it’s pretty much always work stuff. In my role, I visit clients at home, so I do quite a bit of driving. I’m thinking about new ideas and ways to support clients. Other than that it’s random stuff like weekend plans, what I need to remember to buy at the grocery store on the way home and things like that!

What song is your personal anthem?
Hmm I couldn’t really pin it down to one.

If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?
Either slow cooked Mexican beef tacos with home made chilli beans or a smoked paprika roasted chicken with crispy roast potatoes and lots of vegetables.

In the movie of your life, who would play you?
Reece Witherspoon or Scarlett Johansen.

Where is your happy place, and why?
Home is my happy place. I’m surrounded with the things I love and a very excited, happy dog always greets me when I get home. And of course my husband and cat are there too which also make it a great place to be. My other happy place would be a warm sunny beach. Those rolling waves are so relaxing.

How would you describe your personal style?
Casual chic. I’m pretty low maintenance. At the moment I love a comfy pair of dark denim jeans, and a turtle neck sweater and boots.

What is the last thing that made you say ‘wow’?
Sounds cheesy, but last night I went outside and looked up at the star filled sky and thought wow! It’s been a while since I looked up, and I forgot how cool the night sky is.

What is your wish for the future?
To continue to be happy and healthy, along with my family. It’s also to work more on my blog and less at work and have the opportunity to travel more.
