Over the next couple of months we are aiming to regularly feature an awesome group of New Zealand bloggers, from all kinds of genres like health, food, beauty, lifestyle and everything in between. These fabulous bloggers, some well known, some up and coming all have different stories to tell and we want to share them with you!

First up…

Blogger: Rachel Grunwell
Genre: Health & Fitness

Inspired Health

About your blog:

Tell us a little about your blog.
My mission for my blog is to inspire Kiwis to get fitter, healthier and happier! It’s inspired by my journey as a mum.. only two years ago I puffed merely pushing my toddler in his pram and I’ve since become a marathoner, qualified yoga teacher and a bit of a goal-crushing & nutrition geek! I reckon if I can become fitter, then almost anyone can – and I want to help others on this empowering journey. My blog is on the website Inspired Health which showcases a nationwide fitness & events directory, healthy free recipes, nutrition advice and inspirational Kiwis doing incredible things. I create healthy recipes including many gluten-free + kids recipes (my hubby is gluten intolerant and so I can now cook with any type of flour you throw at me! I’m also the queen of healthy smoothies).

What is the story behind how you came to be a blogger?
I’m an award-winning writer and have been a word-smith my entire life, writing for some of the country’s biggest newspapers and magazines. Currently I’m a fitness and health columnist for Fairfax Media (on www.stuff.co.nz). I’ve specialised in writing on the fitness and health industry for the past few years and when I launched the Inspired Health website I couldn’t wait to start my blogging journey. I love and live this fitness and health industry and I meet so many inspiring people all the time – so I have lots of content to share (I just need to find more time to write everything I want to write!)

Where do you go or what do you do to get inspiration for your blog?
I work in the fitness & health industry and so I live it and love it. I’m always training for my next event, taking yoga classes etc and meeting inspiring people.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt and how has it shaped you?
There are many – and many have shaped me in different ways. Some profoundly. One big one is being a mum – so I love more, feel more, give more, love more, dream more.

What one piece of advice would you give to new bloggers?
You’ve got to believe in what you do.

Name some of the bloggers that you look up to and why?
Way too many to single out!

About You:

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?
“Giggle”. I have a constant list to do! But I always try to think of my friends and family. My family is everything to me. My friends too are like my family.

What song is your personal anthem?
Actually it’s a short meditation/chant that is very powerful and resonates with my heart. I was taught this singing meditation from an incredible and talented Auckland yogi, Erin O’Hara. It was a true gift. I sing this chant silently in my mind as I’m running the final kilometres of marathons (it keeps me strong, focused, happy).

If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?
Roast lamb, potatoes, kumara, an amazing salad and lots of veg – plus red wine, I make decadent desserts (something I learnt from my wonderful Nana whom I adore). My philosophy in life, and with Inspired Health, is to try to make 80% good healthy decisions but life is about having fun too and some chocolate and wine also make me happy and life fun. I like to joke that I run so I can eat chocolate. I just have treats “sometimes” and not “all the time” 😉

In the movie of your life, who would play you?
Cate Blanchett – I wish! Just because I admire her. I interviewed her once in Australia. She’s tops.

Where is your happy place, and why?
Running (it’s moving meditation for me) – either doing it alone, with friends or guiding disabled athletes (I’m an ambassador for the charity Achilles and help disabled Kiwis take part in events). My happy place is also doing yoga, being in nature, swimming in the sea with my kids, creating cakes in the kitchen or growing things in the garden. Actually, the beach is my “paradise”. Give me sand, sea, sun, surf and my smiling kids there with me and I couldn’t possibly be happier.

How would you describe your personal style?
Girly, often sporty, but I love a decadent and stylish dress (think Ingrid Starnes, Karen Walker, or Nom D )and great heels too. You can spot me in Winter a mile off – I love wearing my raspberry red beret. I love style, fashion and designer clothes… My passion for fitness has also exposed me to a lot of fitness gear and gadgets. I can give you the low down on brands and what they are good at producing and why….

What is the last thing that made you say ‘wow’?
An inspirational woman I interviewed for a story today. Her story is AMAZING.

What is your wish for the future?
That my kids will grow up healthy, happy and be dream-chasers (whatever their dreams may be and whatever makes them happy).
