Mekong Baby! Ponsonby Rd Southeast Asian Fusion Restuarant

When we were invited to come along to the new Mekong Baby restuarant I was a little nervous, as I am not a big fan of seafood and especially dislike coriander (a common ingredient in Asian cuisine).  However, we couldn’t pass up an opportuity like this … to sample food from Award-­‐winning chef Dominique Parat!

Ceara, Nicky and I all scrubbed up, and headed along for a Friday afternoon lunch to try the clever recreation of Southeast Asian fusion on Ponsonby Rd, Auckland.   The meals were beautifully presented and left you with a light and fresh feeling, not at all heavy.  It felt like eating food that is GOOD for your body, if you know what I mean.

Growing up on a ‘meat and three veg’ diet, sampling foods like this is an adventure for me, but I decided I was going to try everything.  I am pleased to say I did, apart from one extra spicy dish which, as I am breastfeeding, I had to pass up on (didn’t want to upset the baby).  I tried the Wok Fried Squid, Nuoc Cham, & Vietnamese Mint … delicious! Kingfish Sashimi, Green Nam Jim, Coconut & Basil … first time for sashimi and I loved it.  Betel Leaves, Crab, Kaffir Lime & Chillinever in my life did I think I would eat crab! I spied the coriander in this next one but tried it anyway … Shredded Chicken, Ruby Grapefruit & Coconut Salad.  I have to say this was one of my favourites and may have changed my mind on the hating coriander front!  I actually keep thinking about this chicken salad dish long after leaving.  That, and the Pork Belly, Apple Slaw, & Chilli Caramel … OH MY, this was my favourite.  The best pork belly I have ever tried!  I will no doubt be booking in again to try these two meals … yum!  They also have a fabulous range of cocktails to try, that no doubt complement the menu beautifully.
